One of the biggest highlights of VMware Workstation 8 is the completely revamped user interface. VMware has worked hard to really streamline user interface navigation and make things easier for users to get around and access features that they want or need. The new virtual machine library in particular makes it very easy for users to see data on remote and local virtual machines currently running. There’s also a great search feature that will enable users to save a lot of time. All of these things apply to all virtual machines whether they are running on a vSphere, on a network, or on local PC.

VMware Workstation 8 System Requirements

Cpu-Z Intel VT-xIn order to install VMware Workstation 8 the physical machine processor has to have the least configuration:

  • CPU – x86 and x86-64
  • support in long mode LAHF/SAHF

If you're not sure of the capabilities of your CPU, you can simply use CPU-Z, which you can download for free and which will determine exactly if your system is a 64 bit.

If you're interested in running a 64 bit nested guest, for example VMware vSphere, then your CPU has to have additional features:

  • a segment-limit support in long mode AMD CPU
  • a Intel CPU with VT-x support which needs to be enabled in the physical machine's BIOS.

VMware Workstation 8 also boasts support for up to 64GB of total RAM, USB 3.0, HD audio, Bluetooth, and enhanced 3D graphics performance. As an added bonus, the built-in 64-bit support can also be used with virtual machines that are running on vSphere, which is a definite boon for virtual vmware machine power users.

There are plenty of other great features included in every installation of VMware Workstation 8, such as the ability to run as a server on a network and share all kinds of things like virtual machines with anyone online, and tight integration with the cloud that will give users the ability to access virtual machines no matter where they are.

VMware Workstation 8 can be purchased as a standalone software product or as an upgrade for VMware Workstation versions 6 or 7. If you already have either of those two previous versions, you will save a lot of money by simply upgrading instead of buying the standalone version. VMware Workstation 8 is definitely worth every cent considering the many features and benefits that it offers.
